Geomatics for Environmental Management (MGEM)

Our course-based Master of Geomatics for Environmental Management(MGEM), is designed for foresters, ecologists, conservation managers and other practitioners worldwide seeking to improve their understandingof geospatial theory, methods, application and tools. It is a 9-month program at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver campus. It begins in August with a 3-week intensive and concludes the following April. After completion students will be able to:

 Integrate landscape ecology concepts with geomatics-focused tools for environmental management.

 Collaborate and communicate with scientists and communities wishing to use geospatial data to solve ecological questions.

The Master of Geomatics for Environmental Management will begin in UBC’s summer term, 2016 (subject to final University and government approval). Applications for our summer start date open in October of the prior year (e.g. apply October 2015 for a summer 2016 start). Admission is competitive and will be completed on a first-come, first served basis. Students admitted to the program must meet the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies master’s degree admission requirements. In addition, applicants must have an academic background in a relevant field such as forestry, environmental science, computer science or geography. Proof of completion of a basic statistics course and a basic knowledge of programming is required.

 MGEM degree components include

 An intensive landscape ecology course designed to introduce ecological modelling and the core themes.

 Courses covering quantitative skills in statistics, programming, GIS and remote sensing/image processing in an environmental context.

 A mix of theory and hands-on practice to provide students with a well-rounded mix of working knowledge and skills.

 Development of a proof of concept/project proposal to answer ecological questions using quantitative analysis.

 Workshops on project management principles providing professional skills to work with researchers, educators and industry professionals in the geospatial data industry
